Diversity is Still Our Solution to Racism
If we just change our approach.
Your head has been buried deep in the sand if you have not seen or heard something about racism in the recent news or on social media. Racism is not a novel subject for our country, but the political and social climate of our current time have finally brought it back to the forefront of our attention. Everyone seems to have their opinion on racism but finding consensus on how to eliminate it is another issue.
Diversity is not a new subject either, but it has become more mainstream as our primary corporate approach to solving our problems with racism (many other ism’s as well). On the surface, companies appear to be taking matters seriously as diversity training has evolved into what is now a $3 billion industry. If you work for a company of any size, it is highly likely you have been through or will soon go through some form of training on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
As you might expect, diversity also has its detractors. It has not taken long for this happen, but we are now seeing increasing critical commentary regarding diversity training and initiatives. According to this narrative, diversity training is nothing more than a check the box solution for companies to take credit for the initiative but nothing tangible really gets done.
